And it begins…
Today we leave to paddle on the Grass River. We wake up and
get into our tents and make a breakfast to keep us full. My tent group attempted
to make pancakes, resulting in each person only getting two mini-pancakes. Oh,
the joy of learning how to make food on back country stoves! As we got to the
marina and started to load the canoes, I was taught a knot by Liz called the
bowline knot. Leaving Cranberry Portage was bittersweet. Our time there had been
special because Jeff had the honor to meet the major from town and was given a
book on the Grass River that had many helpful tricks and goodies inside that
will help us on our journey across the river. Also, there was a local lady from
town who visited us at our campsite and talked to us and was saying how she
envies us doing what we are going to do for 32 days. Also, she gave us fresh
picked blueberries and gave us some fresh whipped cream to go with it. Also,
the lady from the coffee shop was very kind and excited for us to begin this
journey on the Grass River. It is a great feeling for a town to invite you in
and be so kind with gifts and wise words. I think leaving the day we did was
good because we got to experience more locals in the town. Our leaving was a good
way of encouragement for our group to know that we can do this. I can say when
we got to our first campsite our adventure started in a way of having to
accommodate many things such as a small campsite, setting up tents, and not
slipping down the huge rock we made our dinners on. But, at the end of the day
we laughed and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. I am excited for the next days of
being on this river because it has already been awesome. I leave you with this
quote. “The human spirit needs a place where nature has not been rearranged by
the hand of man.” – Anonymous
